The Space
Following his return to Canada from Hollywood in the late 1970s, acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Norman Jewison established 18 Gloucester Lane as his Toronto film production headquarters and private pied à terre.
Located in downtown Toronto’s Heritage Yonge Street District, the historic industrial building served for more than four decades as a creative production studio where filmmakers, writers, editors and production designers collaborated across multiple floors. The property included post production facilities, editing suites and creative workspaces that contributed to Toronto’s evolving film and media industry.
18 Gloucester Lane served as the creative headquarters for many of Norman Jewison’s most recognized films, including Moonstruck, Agnes of God, The Hurricane, Only You and Other People’s Money. Scripts were developed, edited and refined within the building’s collaborative studio environment, reinforcing its role within Toronto’s film and creative industries. Jewison often described the property as his “mini TriBeCa,” referencing the creative energy and mixed use character of New York’s iconic arts district.
Today, 18 Gloucester Lane functions as a boutique mixed use commercial and residential property in downtown Toronto, offering ground floor office or retail space, four modernized office suites and a penthouse residential unit within a restored heritage building.
The Building
Built in 1912, 18 Gloucester Lane is a rare surviving example of early 20th century industrial architecture in Toronto. Commissioned by Lionel Rawlinson, a prominent cabinetmaker and furniture dealer, the building originally served as a warehouse and repair facility.
Designed by Curry and Sparling, an architectural partnership recognized for their early 20th century institutional commissions, the design of 18 Gloucester Lane reflects the measured restraint of Edwardian Classicism.
Now listed on the City of Toronto’s Inventory of Heritage Properties, 18 Gloucester Lane stands as one of the few remaining industrial buildings from the city’s early 20th century building boom. Set among a cluster of historic structures, including the adjacent 1868 Charles Levey Houses, the Patterson Block and the Robert Bustard Building, it contributes to a cohesive streetscape that captures a defining moment in Toronto’s architectural and commercial evolution.
Today, the legacy of 18 Gloucester Lane lives on in every brick and beam. It’s a building that doesn’t just tell a story, this Signature Space has shaped Canadian cinema from within.
